Project overview
Naturalistic spoken stories engage distributed brain systems involved in auditory processing and language comprehension. This project will examine how moment-to-moment acoustic energy relates to brain activity during listening to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, using preprocessed functional MRI data from The Alice Dataset (OpenNeuro: ds002322). A root-mean-square (RMS) audio envelope will be computed from the story audio, aligned to each fMRI run, and modeled as a continuous predictor of the blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal. Run-level models will include motion parameters and appropriate baseline terms. RMS-effect coefficient maps will then be combined within each participant, and participant-level maps will be tested at the group level. The analysis will focus on identifying brain regions whose activity covaries with RMS acoustic energy during story listening. This approach provides a reproducible framework for relating a measurable feature of natural speech to brain responses in a narrative context. Interpretation will account for audio–scanner timing, preprocessing and spatial alignment, and multiple-comparison correction.
